How to Choose a Career
The Genius in Everyone
I would like to define the genius in the terms of modern mental science, as one who expresses more fully than the rest of us, the quality which belongs to each of us. I would like to express my faith in the inherent greatness of the most commonplace among us, in the face of the chill winds of heredity, “chromosomes,” “sports,” “variations,” “mutations,” or the seekers after miracles. I would still stand with Wordsworth on the principle that “trailing clouds of glory do we come from God who is our home,” conceding only that with the genius the clouds have condensed into a mantle, while with the rest of us they have dissipated into mist. But I insist that with each of us, it is the same kind of “glory” that we trail. The genius is the man who feels within himself the capacity to do or to express along a given line, and who insists with himself and the world that he shall unfold that which he feels himself to be. As Edwin Markham has said,
“To each is given a stone to carve for the wall,
A stone that is needeed to heighten the beauty of all;
And only his soul has the magic to give it a grace.
And only his hand has the cunning to put it in place.”
The genius then is the man who has discovered the stone he is to carve, and who goes on to carve it in spite of all that rises to discourage or oppose.
To so define genius is not to deny biological science. With some, the soul has possessed itself of a better body for its expression; we are not forced to admit that the body has possessed itself of a better soul. In fact, what we have always defined as genius has shown a definite contempt for the physical, frequently housing itself in offensive clay, as though to better reveail its independence of all things material. Anterior to bodies, the soul is not the product of environment, but cleverly adapts the house it occupies to the changing conditions of the objective world and thus survives in the midst of natural forces. Man is like an oak tree growing on the slope of some exposed hill. The fierce winds beat upon it, but it struggles against them, drives its roots into a firmer anchorage, and presents as little foliage as possible to the blast. The wind does not make the oak what it is, the oak makes itself what it is by adapting itself to the situations it meets. So it is with man. He has within himself the power to cope with the conditions of life, heredity, environment, and all the myriad problems of existence.
The genius, then, is the man who, like the rest of us, finds himself equipped with a mind that is equal to the requirement of life; but who, unlike the rest of us, finds out what he can best do and then goes to work to do it.
The mere taking up of a profession or vocation, however, is not enough to constitute the act of genius. Everyone takes up a vocation or profession, but with the vast majority life’s work is accepted rather than chosen; and on other grounds than our inherent individuality of being. We “drift into” teaching school because we “need to make the money”; because others around us have “taken up teaching”; because it “gives us the associations of culture,” and so on: not because we have the “souls of teachers.” One becomes a doctor because father is a physician, or “there is a good income in it after you make good”; not because he has “the heart of a healer.”
Thus men who are natural mechanics enter the professions, women who are natural artists become stenographers, and vice versa ad infinitum. But how can this situation be changed?
Self-Discovery
What is the solution?
Self-discovery.
What could sound more trite! Have we not read from the Delphic shrine “know thyself,” for the last two thousand years and more!
Well, but after all, just what has that meant to us? Do we really know the self? How much has even the most learned among mankind known about his self during these ages? And has not modern Psychology infinitely involved the problem by raising a doubt as to what the self really is? How can you know that which changes so quickly that it is like a swiftly-flowing river, --you touch its surface, and even as you touch it, the point is gone forever! Are you then a succession of selves none of which can ever be discovered?
I introduce this problem merely to eliminate the charge of triteness. It will do us all good to make a scientific study of the self.
For our present purpose however it does not matter whether we consider the self as an entity-drop in the ocean of life, or an entity -”stream-of-consciousness” itself to borrow William James famous phrase. The fact remains that each and every one of us is an individual distinct if not apart from all other individuals.
The question arises however as to the source of this individual drop or stream of consciousness. We admit that individual life is dependent on something, and herein is a problem in comprehension for those who have never considered life and intelligence apart from personality.
Let us think of a universal mind like a vast ocean. It has within itself an infinite variety of ideas and purposes, each distinct, but all harmonious with each other. Let us conceive each one of these ideas or purposes to be an individual current, the Gulf Stream, or Japanese Current, as it were, of the Universal Mind. This Universal Mind expresses in movement, its purposes express in selves. The self, therefore, is life, mind (or spirit) individualizing as a soul. This is graphically represented in the Greek word (psyche?) which we find so often in the New Testament and which means “life,” “spirit,” and which modern science has adopted to designate the self; as in psychology, knowledge of the self; in psycho-analysis, the study and treatment of a “sick self,” etc.
Nothing could be more stimulating to the discovery of genius and its successful expression than the recognition that each self is an individual stream of the Universal Mind or Cosmic Consciousness, separate from all others, unified with all others, different from all others, in harmony with all others, supported by an infinite life, and flowing forth to be and to do a distinct and therefore personal thing.
Your Unique Personality
This then is primary, you are different form every other, you have an individual quality; there is something for you to do which no other can do because you are what no other can be.
Beware again of accepting this merely as a platitude --”there are no two leaves alike,” but what of it? Get behind your platitude. Consider the fact that there is no phenomenon without a noumenon. Take another platitude. “There are no two faces alike.” For this we thank a merciful heaven, we say. But we must esxplain the phenomenon, the face, by the noumenon, the self. It is this self that working in the embryo takes the materials of nature and heredity and constructs a human form; that later adapts that form to changing conditions of environment; and moulds the face to sublime or vicious expression according to the types of thought and desire of the individual.
But dissect your platitude a little further. The reason two faces are not alike is because the mental content is different; but in the case of some husbands and wives who have loved and lived in mutual likes and dislikes for fifty years, have you noted the similarity of expression?
Thus we dissolve not the platitude but the prejudice. We look different because we are different. There is something gloriously individual about us. There is an inherent quality of genius. “Man,” said Emerson, “is the inlet and the outlet of all there is in God.” Even if we modify this we may say that whatever I am is derived from an Infinite Source, shares in the quality of the Parent Mind, and therefore my uniqueness as a self is as genuine as any genius that has ever come into expression.
Does this automatically constitute me a great artist, author, musician, statesman, leader of mankind? Let us leave the question of “greatness” to society and history. That cannot be the moving impulse of genius. My geniums must consist in expressing that which I fundamentally am. There is something in me that can be satisfied only by my living my life along a certain line, in following which I find joy and satisfaction.
The Psychology of Interest Applied to Choice of a Career
How shall this secret of the self be revealed? How can one know when he is following the right course? Fortunately the self knows what it wants and has moments of revelation. It is the psychology of “interest” which is the big word in modern pedagogy. The attention must be engaged. At first an appeal is made through the play instinct as in the Montessori system or the Stoner system. Follows pictorial presentation for geography; field excursions and laboratory for science; dramatization for literature, etc. All these are an appeal to that magician of learning, interest. We develop only as we are interested. We remember best that which intrigues us. And on the other hand deterioration is the history of lost interest as psycho-physicians of every school will testify.
Our fundamental interest is always associated with that which is most closely concerned with the primary quality and purpose of self.
It follows from this that the method of vocational selection is psychological. It is not my purpose here to outline a full technique but rather to point out a way by which we can discover our real “bent” and either choose a vocation with some scientific accuracy or procure some sort of realignment in case we are already off the path of true self-expression.
I suggest that those interested secure a small note book and begin collection of “chief interests.” When you read, what interests you at the most? At the theater? On the screen? At school? On the street? What objects attract attention?
What are your thoughts about what you see? Do you find yourself reverting to these things? Pleasantly or unpleasantly? Why are you pleased or displeased? Do your thoughts about things or happenings please you more than the things do themselves? Do you “day dream” in connection with them? Do you imagine yourself in situations connected with your observations? Do you select certain aspects and ruminate on those? Do you improve mentally upon situations, mechanics, or conversations, that is, have you a better way for anything? In other words, what is your creative impulse?
Write out these things carefully and then underscore with a red pencil what interests you the most.
Keep this up until you have a definite idea as to what your fundamental interests are.
How to Use the Subconscious in the Choice of a Career
Second, engage the services of the subconscious. Your subconscious intelligence is acquainted with a vast variety of facts of which you are not objectively aware.
Here, in the subconscious, is a vast store of material which must be looked over and taken into consideration. Here are desires long since repressed, instincts long denied, passionate preferences shut out of consciousness to fit the apparent requirements of yesterday. For example, you had artistic inclinations but submerged them because father wanted you to go into business. Or perhaps you would like to have entered law but your family traditions headed you into the ministry. Or the spoken drama lured you across the footlights but mother closed the door to the stage. So it came about that your instinctive inclinations, your native purpose, baffled by the practical problem of pleasing the family, making a living or what not, never really had an opportunity to express itself to you. Your dominant interest has never been clear to you, your parent purpose is as vague as the face of your mother who died in your childhood. Only the feeling remains of something beautiful that is gone.
But is has not gone from the subconscious! There your fundamental interest lives beneath the level of objective consciousness, occasionally heaving the surface. Even more, it may, like a fallen angle gather about it a host of hidden forces and attack the very integrity of the organism. For strange as it may seem, the psycho-analyst is daily tracing the cause of phobias, hysteria, neurasthenia, all sorts of neuroses, varieties of liver complaints, goiter, stomach disorders, etc., etc., to its lair in buried memories, repressed emotions, unsolved problems, and unsatisfied interests.
Use of Intuition in Choice of a Career
Indeed, I shall here suggest to the psychoanalyst that the real cause of the diseases which he studies is not the obscure sex conflicts of Freud nor the “inferiority complex” of Adler, although they may play a secondary part. The real cause of all these troubles is the unsatisfied purpose of each human soul. The self, the psyche, has come into the world to fulfill a divine and definite destiny. “For this cause came I into the world that I might bear witness to the truth,” can be said of every man. “Some are prophets, some apostles, some teachers, some have the gift of tongues,” “each according to his gift.”
When the self is not called to the stand, when it cannot bear witness to its purpose, it gets “sick.” Then as there is no phenomenon without a noumenon, or in the language of Professor James, “all mental states are followed by bodily activity of some sort,” the body gets sick.
But how can that which is spiritual get “sick.” Certainly it is incorruptible. We have a slang phrase which covers it. “You make me sick.” “I am mentally distressed because you act the way you do. I am unhappy about it. I shall get no comfort until you correct your conduct and I shall give you none.” Thus the self seeks to arouse the individual and force him back to the original purpose. He must “get right with himself.” He must begin creating along the line of his original purpose. And the self knows.
The self knows! How shall it tell? The voice of intuition speaking through the subconscious.
But what is the technique? We have already learned the method of probing the subconscious. But there is a further method which we can follow.
Let us first review the law of the subconscious, since we are to make our appeal through it.
Briefly stated our law is this:
1. The subconscious is our mental storehouse, it is the builder of the body, it is the epitome of intelligence, its reasoning is deductive, and, given any premise, its logic is conclusive.
2. It accepts any idea impressed upon it.
3. It seeks to give form or expression to every idea.
Let us take, for example, the case of hypnotic suggestion. In hypnotism the conscious mind is, as it were, asleep. The subconscious mind is awake. We suggest to it that flesh is burning. We touch the spot indicated and with some sensitives the response is so strong that an actual blister appears on the skin. In other words, the subconscious works out the idea to a complete conclusion.
In recollecting we say, “I know that, I know that, but I have momentarily forgotten it.” Then we proceed to recall ideas, mental pictures,
associations that surround it, and presently memory disgorges her treasures.
Or we have a mathematical problem and wrestle with it throughout the evening. Unlike Jacob’s angel there is nothing heavenly about it but it gets us on the thigh just the same. We retire with our mind still filled with the “principle of the problem,” that is we “know the rule” and we go to sleep. This is all the subconscious mind requires, that it be given the premises and a free field without interference from the objective mind. We wake later and the problem is solved and we put it on paper.
We all know that this occurs sometimes, why does it not always occur? The answer is that perhaps the subconscious always does solve the problem under these circumstances but so thick is the partition between subjectivity and objectivity that it rarely rises to consciousness. The phrase “thick-headed” was doubtless an intuitive coinage!
To return to our technique.
Go to bed tonight with this thought definitely in your mind. “There is an intelligence in me that knows just exactly what I ought to be doing and it will tell me.” Give yourself this suggestion just as you are falling asleep. In sleep, the objective mind is quiescent, objectivity is stilled, but the subconscious activity of mind is wide awake, “the night is the day of the soul.” It will work out your problem, it will make its connections! The moment you awake ask it the question and it will make its divine revelation!
At first you may experience some vagueness of mental impression, but this is due to inexperience in the practice. After receiving a psychological impulse of this kind, you are free to turn your rationalizing powers upon it. In so doing, you will be assured of its genuineness by the fact that it will work out a line of action or at least a trend in the direction in which you are seeking guidance. As you pursue the path indicated, you will find yourself moving more and more difintely and with greater assurance.
One of my friends, a New York business man, in making decision of importance, mentally maps out the two or three directions it is possible to take; then turns it over to his deeper and better informed intelligence, saying “Tomorrow at eleven (or any other hour selected) I shall know just what to do.” At the appointed time, no matter what else may be occupying his attention at the moment, the subject in question rises spontaneously to his mind. He finds himself able to think clearly only along one line. His mind refuses to go in any other direction. Thus he is drawn into the right current and is swept forward without encountering unnecessary difficulties.
Learn to depend upon this power of intuition, the voice of the indwelling spirit which will bring you into harmony with the Cosmic Spirit and “teach you all things and guide you in the way of truth.”
These answers to our problem do not always come at once, or rather they may come but we do not hear the voice, it is so still and so small. But this is due to lack of practice and we must persist until it speaks to us with some of the certainty of the voices of Joan of Arc, or Socrates, or Jesus.
There is one final word I would like to say for those who are the wrong track already and know it. “Is it ever too late? What shall I do now?”
I do not believe it is too late if you still have any years of active life before you. If you cannot make a complete transition, then make a partial one. If you can no longer choose motherhood, you can still be a “mother to the race.” The sick, the needy, and the orphan can be your foster family.
But aside from pointing out so obvious a “sublimation” as the psychologist loves to call it, I wish to affirm my own faith that the vast majority of men and women can still get on the right track. I have known many men and women who have completely changed their profession or vocation and “made good,” and it should always be borne in mind that the task is easier because you are now working in harmony with the real law of your being, the divine purpose for which you came into the world.

Concentration
The object of a mental treatment is to implant a suggestion or affirmation in the subconscious mind. We may call it a treatment, “going into the silence,” “realization,” meditation, or concentration. The word concentration means moving toward a center, or bringing the mind to one point. In the case of mysticism, which is a deeper form of concentration or abstraction, it may be called mono-ideism, meaning the holding of one idea to the exclusion of all else. The object is not the tenacious “holding of a thought” as a mental “stunt.” The object is to get an idea firmly implanted in the subconscious so that it will be acted upon to produce the desired result. Concentration is holding the mind to a point to the exclusion of anything that is contrary to the desired purpose.
Bearing this in mind, it can be seen that it is not the method that matters, so much as the result. Whatever will bring us to the point of the mental realization of an idea is of value no matter by what name it may be called. And there may be those who are never able to place themselves in a subjective state, who, nevertheless, are able to hold tenaciously to one idea without change or wavering until it is objectified or realized. Indeed, many who are of a very positive objective type get their results by the positive ness of their ideas without reference to method. There is a big school of metaphysics which follows the method of argumentation in which the practitioner mentally debates, or “argues out of court” anything that opposes the desired good. They use the syllogistic form, such as, “All reality is good.” “This is not good; therefore it is not real.” The method which we follow does not permit of this particular argument for the simple reason that we affirm that every thought produces fruit of its kind and the thistle is as real as the fig, the thorn as real as the rose. Both are the result of what we have planted in thought. But the argumentative method might still be employed. “Whatever a man thinks, he creates. The created cannot control the creator. It has no power in itself. It is merely the result. Results therefore cannot dictate my fate because I have the power to change the thought that produced them. I am not the sport of fate, I am not suffering form any injustice, because nothing comes to me that I may not control by the change of my mind. The problem I face contains a solution or else it is not a problem. The solution of this problem lies within me for I am one with the Universal Intelligence in which all problems are dissolved. There is no power that can oppose me because I am working with infinite power. Weakness, sickness, inharmony, poverty are the results of wrong thought and misdirected faith. I do not need to think of them as inevitable. I will not think of them as inevitable. They are not inevitable. I know that within me is a tower of strength. “The strength of the hills is His also.” “I go from strength to strength. Everyone (who employs the law) is as Mount Zion which cannot be moved.” I now declare that the desired end is within my reach, that I have the power to attain it, that there is nothing to oppose it, that I am happy in working out my problem, that “all things work together for my good,” that I am surrounded by infinite wisdom which will direct me, infinite power which will work for me, infinite peace which holds me eternally in the everlasting arms.”
However, many desire to enter more deeply than this into mental abstraction and a few words of direction will perhaps be welcome.
Steps in Concentration
1. Choose definitely the idea to be realized. The method for such choice, when in doubt, may be found in Chapter VI.
2. Relax.
a. Physical relaxation.
By physical relaxation we mean the letting down of all physical and nervous tension. Sit down or lie in a comfortable position and mentally go over the body saying “I am relaxed, I am relaxed.” If any part of the body is found to be in tension, then speak to that part of the body saying for example to the arm, “You are relaxed,” and then mentally picturing it as relaxed. Presently the most tense contractions will be released.
The use of the breath is very helpful in relaxation. Inhale deeply saying, “I am,” very slowly, then exhale with the word, “relaxing.” “I--a-m--r-e-l-a-x-i-n-g--”
b. Mental relaxation.
Remove mental tension by such methods as reading the Bible, inspirational books, poems, or the quotation of helpful statements and treatments. Affirm that all worry and concern are now being lifted from your mind and that you are mentally giving yourself over to the attention and care of an intelligence which can and will solve all your problems for you.
c. Moral relaxation.
Many people cannot get into the deeper abstraction because of moral tension or a sense of guilt. It is very essential to establish the sense of unity or harmony with your environment and with the universal life. At all costs see to it that your conscience is clear and if it is not, go to work to right whatever wrong rises to cloud your thought. But one must not be introspective to the point of faulty self-consciousness; nor get the idea that an absolutely flawless character is necessary to demonstration. To do so would be to shut off from demonstration not only the large body of those who have grave faults in character but even more those whose character is beautiful and above reproach, for it is true that the higher a man’s moral and spiritual attainment, the more sensitive he is to his own faults and to the requirements of the law of spirituality. But moral relaxation must be obtained for the simple reason that any sense of wrong divides the personality, introduces duality, leads to a feeling of separation --and therefore it is impossible to be monoideistic, and to enter into a state of abstraction.
3. Fixation of attention
To enter into abstraction or the subconscious by psychological methods it is often helpful to aid the attention by fixing it upon some object. The religious devotee often uses the crucifix or some other sacred symbol. Some occultists employ the crystal. The suggestionists often employ the voice, saying, “I am concentrating,” and repeating it monotonously and slowly. Sometimes we see them rubbing the thumb over the nerves along the line of the eyebrow, rubbing away from the bridge of the nose. Others use music or the monotonous tick of the clock or intonations of religious worship. In the use of an object the point is to hold it in such a way as to weary the eye which suggests sleep or mental drowsiness. Everyone enters the state of subconsciousness when he falls asleep and the eye is the first to yield to the lure of relaxation. Therefore to enter into a subconscious state for psychological demonstration we find that the cutting off or dulling of sense perception is necessary. The object is usually held up before the eye and just above the level of the bridge of the nose. A pencil or any similar article answers as well as the crucifix except that religious consciousness often adds expectancy.
Uncontrolled Mental Pictures
4. In concentrating it will be found that as soon as one begins to lose the consciousness of sense perception such as hearing, and sight, the mind begins to amuse itself with all kinds of reveries, fleeting thoughts, visions, memories, impressions and so on. It is surprising in how trifling a matter we may spend the moments of mental indolence. Who else could be as silly as we are in the hobo thoughts that tramp vagrantly across our empty minds?
This is the realm of subjective states of consciousness; and many persons never plunge beneath this surface. Here is where the seeds of impressions and suggestions from our environment find their shallow soil. Large numbers of people live out their lives guided by the chance thoughts that swarm about them seeking recognition and expression. A vast number of the suggestions upon which we act are neither passed upon by our conscious attention nor become fixed ideas in the subconscious.
Controlled Mental Pictures
It is in this field of subjectivity that the mental picturing which we call visualization takes place. Let this be borne carefully in mind for it is the secret of control of the attention. Instead of allowing vagrant thoughts and mental pictures to run through your mind, practice controlled picturization. In other words, at the threshold of the subconscious you may utilize the instinctive tendency to dramatize by controlling the pictures which are presented to the subconscious for creation, as already noted in the chapter on Visualization.
5. The next step is passivity, the state of mental calm into which it is desired to enter. The mental action is now brought under control through the slowing up of physical forces, the abatement of nervous impulses, the removal of mental and moral tensions, the centering of the thought on one picture. It is easy now to let the mind slip into arrested consciousness. Let the stillness of life be realized. Cultivate the love of stillness so that you do not feel awed or alarmed in its presence.
To this end one should develop a spirit of repose and the pleasure of relaxed attention. Gilder tells us to
“Be still and listen,
Be still and drink the quiet
Of all around.”
And by others we are told,
“He giveth his beloved rest.” “There remained therefore a rest for the people of God.” “In quietness and confidence shall be my strength.” “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. Not as the world giveth give I unto you.”
Entering the Subconscious in Falling Asleep
The process of entering the subconscious is not far different from that of falling asleep for we enter the subconscious every night. In falling asleep first comes the letting down of muscular tension, then nerve relaxation. Then the circumference of the mind is indrawn until we think of nothing beyond the borders of our couch. A peaceful calm settles upon us, a sense of well-being. We are entering the mystery of the subconscious, a mystery so deep that the materialist knows it only as a problem while the occultist tells us that “the night of the mind is the day of the soul.” On entering sleep we usually go without a definite idea unless it be a “wonder if we are catching cold,” or an assertion that our old lumbago is coming back; or that it’s not going to rain tomorrow, it’s going to pour.
On the other hand it is quite possible to take a well-chosen idea and a fixed purpose into the subconscious as one falls asleep, in which case the mind will work upon it all night as in the solving of problems. Judge Troward tells us that when both healer and patient are asleep is the best time to give a mental treatment for the simple reason that the idea once taken into the subconscious remains fixed there all night: distance is unknown to the mind, therefore, we may reach our patient anywhere: and finally, the idea will have the most direct influence since there is for the time being no contradiction of the impression such as is set up by the conscious mind during waking hours.
The analogy between concentration and falling asleep, however, is not quite complete for there is a state of consciousness in the conscious entrance of the subconscious which is not found in the sleep of the average person although it is enjoyed by some who have mastered certain occult principles.*

The secret of successful demonstration by the method now being outlined lies in the ability to hold in mind the one particular idea which you are seeking to implant there. Instead of rapping out the message on the wall of the subconscious by means of repeated suggestion or argumentation, you are about to make one definite command within the very center itself where all creation takes place. We had a good illustration of this in the experiment previously referred to where Dr. William F. Kelley was impressing his subconscious with the involuntary movement of his thumb.** Remembering that the subconscious has no power of opposing your idea, you will perceive that all that remains is to be definite enough when you have come into this inner realm of mind.

The Joy of Contacting Universal Mind
Upon entering the subconscious you are in the power house of the personality and in direct contact with universal force and intelligence. The amazing wonder of this statement must strike upon the most stolid mind. To the uninitiated the foregoing scientific presentation may have convinced without awakening the responsive realization without which the truth cannot be appropriated. The intellect perhaps has accepted but the feelings have not yet been aroused. Or worse still, we may have become so accustomed to hearing the truth that we are unaffected by it. Of all states none could be worse than that of the sermon-saturated pagan, who has heard the Word, but after the first flare of enthusiasm, has settled down into cold ashes from which neither bellows nor a whirlwind can again arouse a flame. Rather the ardent glow of ignorance than the ashen gray of uninspired initiation! Happy is he whose whole soul is glowing with the ardor of realization of the divine unity, his oneness with all life, with universal force and movement. With what ecstasy he approaches the center for here he is to find his true nature, here he is to meet with that larger self of which in his conscious hours he is only dimly aware! Here he is to make his impress upon the plastic substance of creative mind. I venture to express this emotion in some lines of verse which came to me during the past summer.*

I am drunk with conception,
I am mad with creative ardor;
The passion of God is upon me
And I shall make as He makes;
I shall take the subtle essence of my being
And build worlds and stars and suns--
There is room for more and I must make them.
O ye wise and prudent, I do not ask,
“Can it be done,” or, “May I do it?”
If ye are fearful, stand aside

I do not urge the reader either to burst into verse or give birth to a sun; but I do trust to fire you with creative ardor to join your forces with the universal flow of energy, to line up with cosmic intelligence and realize your unity with it.
The passionate surrender of the self to the wonder of spiritualized consciousness can be felt in such treatments as the following, expressed by Harvey Hardman, the author’s assistant at the Divine Science Church in New York.
“I reach out to the stars and bring the white radiance of Eternal Light to my healing.
“I penetrate to the still center of Infinite Motion for power to make me well.
“I seek in the calm beauty and mystic serenity of Cosmic Motherhood, the blessing of my peace.
“I enter the inner silence of Divine Consciousness and know that I am well.
“I am; and I am Life and Love --perfect, balanced, joyous and radiant Life and Love.”
Planting the Seed Idea or Mental Impression
Returning to the process of concentration we find that we have now entered into the creative medium of mind, that we are about to impress it directly. For this purpose many find it of value to have written on a piece of paper just what it is they are to imprint. The propitious time is found in the complete immersion of consciousness, which is by some called “the psychological moment,” and without rousing from this state, one makes himself aware, either through the assistance of the paper or not, that he is here for a purpose; he then pronounces the desired suggestion.
The strongest impression rules and as this is scientifically established, the only thing that remains is for the subconscious to work it out into expression as it does in physical healing in the body, and in financial healing of business affairs.
The responsiveness of the involuntary nerves and muscles to the “predominant mental impression” is a well-known fact of modern suggestive psychology and psychoanalysis. It should not be difficult to perceive that the control of business affairs is but an extension of the activity of the same mind.
We may, therefore, look with confidence for a result in harmony with the treatment, on the principle that there is no form without a thought back of it, and there cannot be a thought without a corresponding form following upon it. “Thoughts are things,” is no mere poetic statement.
The Mystical Consciousness
It is not our purpose here to teach the development of the mystical consciousness, but it may be remarked that the preceding method leads definitely to the doorway of the ego. It is, as it were, the passage way leading to the king’s chamber in the human pyramid, familiar to all students of occultism. Through it one may be led until he stands face to face with himself, and comes into mystical consciousness of that Wider Self to which he is related and of which he is indeed an undivided part. We refer the reader to our book on “Being and Becoming” for a study of the principles of the development of this wider consciousness, being content here to stop at the point where the demonstration has been made which leads to financial freedom and the sense of mastery which follows upon a self-directed course. “Men are sometimes masters of their fate; the fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars but in ourselves, that we are underlings.” Men may be not only sometimes masters of their fate but always, if they will avail themselves of those indwelling powers which are part of man’s heritage as he comes into the material world to work out the development of the individualized self-conscious existence.
Realization
The life in me is God in me and I am, therefore, pure spirit, free from ills of body, mind, and soul. In pure spirit I live, move, and have my being. I am perfect, even as my Father in Heaven is perfect. The breath which I breathe is the breath of the Spirit. The food which I eat is the gift of the Spirit. The consciousness of the Perfect Spirit is mine, and I know it and feel it flowing through my whole being, bringing with it strength, power and perfect peace. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, and I feel His presence all around me, in me and through me. I am free from all sickness, worry, and fear. Perfect love casts out all fear from me and I am free. Health, hope, peace, life, love, truth, and plenty are mine. These I claim from God. These in the name of the Indwelling Christ I now receive. I render thanks for the perfect gift. Amen.
Concentration
The object of a mental treatment is to implant a suggestion or affirmation in the subconscious mind. We may call it a treatment, “going into the silence,” “realization,” meditation, or concentration. The word concentration means moving toward a center, or bringing the mind to one point. In the case of mysticism, which is a deeper form of concentration or abstraction, it may be called mono-ideism, meaning the holding of one idea to the exclusion of all else. The object is not the tenacious “holding of a thought” as a mental “stunt.” The object is to get an idea firmly implanted in the subconscious so that it will be acted upon to produce the desired result. Concentration is holding the mind to a point to the exclusion of anything that is contrary to the desired purpose.
Bearing this in mind, it can be seen that it is not the method that matters, so much as the result. Whatever will bring us to the point of the mental realization of an idea is of value no matter by what name it may be called. And there may be those who are never able to place themselves in a subjective state, who, nevertheless, are able to hold tenaciously to one idea without change or wavering until it is objectified or realized. Indeed, many who are of a very positive objective type get their results by the positive ness of their ideas without reference to method. There is a big school of metaphysics which follows the method of argumentation in which the practitioner mentally debates, or “argues out of court” anything that opposes the desired good. They use the syllogistic form, such as, “All reality is good.” “This is not good; therefore it is not real.” The method which we follow does not permit of this particular argument for the simple reason that we affirm that every thought produces fruit of its kind and the thistle is as real as the fig, the thorn as real as the rose. Both are the result of what we have planted in thought. But the argumentative method might still be employed. “Whatever a man thinks, he creates. The created cannot control the creator. It has no power in itself. It is merely the result. Results therefore cannot dictate my fate because I have the power to change the thought that produced them. I am not the sport of fate, I am not suffering form any injustice, because nothing comes to me that I may not control by the change of my mind. The problem I face contains a solution or else it is not a problem. The solution of this problem lies within me for I am one with the Universal Intelligence in which all problems are dissolved. There is no power that can oppose me because I am working with infinite power. Weakness, sickness, inharmony, poverty are the results of wrong thought and misdirected faith. I do not need to think of them as inevitable. I will not think of them as inevitable. They are not inevitable. I know that within me is a tower of strength. “The strength of the hills is His also.” “I go from strength to strength. Everyone (who employs the law) is as Mount Zion which cannot be moved.” I now declare that the desired end is within my reach, that I have the power to attain it, that there is nothing to oppose it, that I am happy in working out my problem, that “all things work together for my good,” that I am surrounded by infinite wisdom which will direct me, infinite power which will work for me, infinite peace which holds me eternally in the everlasting arms.”
However, many desire to enter more deeply than this into mental abstraction and a few words of direction will perhaps be welcome.
Steps in Concentration
1. Choose definitely the idea to be realized. The method for such choice, when in doubt, may be found in Chapter VI.
2. Relax.
a. Physical relaxation.
By physical relaxation we mean the letting down of all physical and nervous tension. Sit down or lie in a comfortable position and mentally go over the body saying “I am relaxed, I am relaxed.” If any part of the body is found to be in tension, then speak to that part of the body saying for example to the arm, “You are relaxed,” and then mentally picturing it as relaxed. Presently the most tense contractions will be released.
The use of the breath is very helpful in relaxation. Inhale deeply saying, “I am,” very slowly, then exhale with the word, “relaxing.” “I--a-m--r-e-l-a-x-i-n-g--”
b. Mental relaxation.
Remove mental tension by such methods as reading the Bible, inspirational books, poems, or the quotation of helpful statements and treatments. Affirm that all worry and concern are now being lifted from your mind and that you are mentally giving yourself over to the attention and care of an intelligence which can and will solve all your problems for you.
c. Moral relaxation.
Many people cannot get into the deeper abstraction because of moral tension or a sense of guilt. It is very essential to establish the sense of unity or harmony with your environment and with the universal life. At all costs see to it that your conscience is clear and if it is not, go to work to right whatever wrong rises to cloud your thought. But one must not be introspective to the point of faulty self-consciousness; nor get the idea that an absolutely flawless character is necessary to demonstration. To do so would be to shut off from demonstration not only the large body of those who have grave faults in character but even more those whose character is beautiful and above reproach, for it is true that the higher a man’s moral and spiritual attainment, the more sensitive he is to his own faults and to the requirements of the law of spirituality. But moral relaxation must be obtained for the simple reason that any sense of wrong divides the personality, introduces duality, leads to a feeling of separation --and therefore it is impossible to be monoideistic, and to enter into a state of abstraction.
3. Fixation of attention
To enter into abstraction or the subconscious by psychological methods it is often helpful to aid the attention by fixing it upon some object. The religious devotee often uses the crucifix or some other sacred symbol. Some occultists employ the crystal. The suggestionists often employ the voice, saying, “I am concentrating,” and repeating it monotonously and slowly. Sometimes we see them rubbing the thumb over the nerves along the line of the eyebrow, rubbing away from the bridge of the nose. Others use music or the monotonous tick of the clock or intonations of religious worship. In the use of an object the point is to hold it in such a way as to weary the eye which suggests sleep or mental drowsiness. Everyone enters the state of subconsciousness when he falls asleep and the eye is the first to yield to the lure of relaxation. Therefore to enter into a subconscious state for psychological demonstration we find that the cutting off or dulling of sense perception is necessary. The object is usually held up before the eye and just above the level of the bridge of the nose. A pencil or any similar article answers as well as the crucifix except that religious consciousness often adds expectancy.
Uncontrolled Mental Pictures
4. In concentrating it will be found that as soon as one begins to lose the consciousness of sense perception such as hearing, and sight, the mind begins to amuse itself with all kinds of reveries, fleeting thoughts, visions, memories, impressions and so on. It is surprising in how trifling a matter we may spend the moments of mental indolence. Who else could be as silly as we are in the hobo thoughts that tramp vagrantly across our empty minds?
This is the realm of subjective states of consciousness; and many persons never plunge beneath this surface. Here is where the seeds of impressions and suggestions from our environment find their shallow soil. Large numbers of people live out their lives guided by the chance thoughts that swarm about them seeking recognition and expression. A vast number of the suggestions upon which we act are neither passed upon by our conscious attention nor become fixed ideas in the subconscious.
Controlled Mental Pictures
It is in this field of subjectivity that the mental picturing which we call visualization takes place. Let this be borne carefully in mind for it is the secret of control of the attention. Instead of allowing vagrant thoughts and mental pictures to run through your mind, practice controlled picturization. In other words, at the threshold of the subconscious you may utilize the instinctive tendency to dramatize by controlling the pictures which are presented to the subconscious for creation, as already noted in the chapter on Visualization.
5. The next step is passivity, the state of mental calm into which it is desired to enter. The mental action is now brought under control through the slowing up of physical forces, the abatement of nervous impulses, the removal of mental and moral tensions, the centering of the thought on one picture. It is easy now to let the mind slip into arrested consciousness. Let the stillness of life be realized. Cultivate the love of stillness so that you do not feel awed or alarmed in its presence.
To this end one should develop a spirit of repose and the pleasure of relaxed attention. Gilder tells us to
“Be still and listen,
Be still and drink the quiet
Of all around.”
And by others we are told,
“He giveth his beloved rest.” “There remained therefore a rest for the people of God.” “In quietness and confidence shall be my strength.” “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. Not as the world giveth give I unto you.”
Entering the Subconscious in Falling Asleep
The process of entering the subconscious is not far different from that of falling asleep for we enter the subconscious every night. In falling asleep first comes the letting down of muscular tension, then nerve relaxation. Then the circumference of the mind is indrawn until we think of nothing beyond the borders of our couch. A peaceful calm settles upon us, a sense of well-being. We are entering the mystery of the subconscious, a mystery so deep that the materialist knows it only as a problem while the occultist tells us that “the night of the mind is the day of the soul.” On entering sleep we usually go without a definite idea unless it be a “wonder if we are catching cold,” or an assertion that our old lumbago is coming back; or that it’s not going to rain tomorrow, it’s going to pour.
On the other hand it is quite possible to take a well-chosen idea and a fixed purpose into the subconscious as one falls asleep, in which case the mind will work upon it all night as in the solving of problems. Judge Troward tells us that when both healer and patient are asleep is the best time to give a mental treatment for the simple reason that the idea once taken into the subconscious remains fixed there all night: distance is unknown to the mind, therefore, we may reach our patient anywhere: and finally, the idea will have the most direct influence since there is for the time being no contradiction of the impression such as is set up by the conscious mind during waking hours.
The analogy between concentration and falling asleep, however, is not quite complete for there is a state of consciousness in the conscious entrance of the subconscious which is not found in the sleep of the average person although it is enjoyed by some who have mastered certain occult principles.*

The secret of successful demonstration by the method now being outlined lies in the ability to hold in mind the one particular idea which you are seeking to implant there. Instead of rapping out the message on the wall of the subconscious by means of repeated suggestion or argumentation, you are about to make one definite command within the very center itself where all creation takes place. We had a good illustration of this in the experiment previously referred to where Dr. William F. Kelley was impressing his subconscious with the involuntary movement of his thumb.** Remembering that the subconscious has no power of opposing your idea, you will perceive that all that remains is to be definite enough when you have come into this inner realm of mind.

The Joy of Contacting Universal Mind
Upon entering the subconscious you are in the power house of the personality and in direct contact with universal force and intelligence. The amazing wonder of this statement must strike upon the most stolid mind. To the uninitiated the foregoing scientific presentation may have convinced without awakening the responsive realization without which the truth cannot be appropriated. The intellect perhaps has accepted but the feelings have not yet been aroused. Or worse still, we may have become so accustomed to hearing the truth that we are unaffected by it. Of all states none could be worse than that of the sermon-saturated pagan, who has heard the Word, but after the first flare of enthusiasm, has settled down into cold ashes from which neither bellows nor a whirlwind can again arouse a flame. Rather the ardent glow of ignorance than the ashen gray of uninspired initiation! Happy is he whose whole soul is glowing with the ardor of realization of the divine unity, his oneness with all life, with universal force and movement. With what ecstasy he approaches the center for here he is to find his true nature, here he is to meet with that larger self of which in his conscious hours he is only dimly aware! Here he is to make his impress upon the plastic substance of creative mind. I venture to express this emotion in some lines of verse which came to me during the past summer.*

Visualization or Dramatization
One may be said to have a concrete idea of a thing if he can make a mental picture of it. A true mental picture has definiteness of detail, outline, and finish. Such a picture cannot be made in ignorance of the subject, and therefore the making of it means study, preparation, fitness. The inventor must understand something of principles in order to create the mechanism. There must be an order and harmony of ideas such as was demonstrated during the war in the creation of the Liberty motor. We have already commended the principle of imagination in the Twenty Secrets of Success.
Imagination is a creative faculty because it enables us to take parts which have hitherto never been arranged in the present order and to assemble them into a form never before assumed. It is thus that angelic forms spring from the broken marble, air-cushioned motors replace the wonderful one-horse shay; and Jules Verne today might ride triumphantly with the United States fleet more than “twenty-thousand leagues under the se” --no doubt as a very welcome guest.
The power of mental dramatization parades mythical figures across the stage, speaking words of romance and despair, of love and death, of comedy and tragedy, and out of it a great play is born. It revels in the splendor of past greatness, clothes its figures in the velvets and laces of royalty, puts ancient kings upon the throne, saves the honor of queens and princesses through the devotion of d’Artagnans, and spreads it all on the silver screen where millions may read the history and romance of antiquity.
One should never be afraid to dramatize his ideals, to make them living things of flesh and blood, of iron and steel, of love and plenty, of honor and attainment.
Rules of Visualization
The rules of visualization are simple. First, decide what you want. You cannot hope to create what is indistinct as a desire. My first question to all who come for help is, “What do you want?” If you do not know, find out. Have a desire, an ambition, a purpose.
Second, see it as clearly with mental vision as you can. The author knew intimately a man who was at one time living in a small beach home in Southern California. He owned only an equity in the property. Having learned the laws of mental creation, he began to visualize himself as owning a very fine residence in another city. He saw himself going up the steps to the porch of the new home, taking the pass key from his pocket, and letting himself in. His mental picture was of a wide and spacious hall with a fireplace in which a blaze sent out its cheerful light and warmth. A stairway led to the upper rooms and he pictured himself as leisurely descending to greet a guest, himself dressed in white, as the symbol of leisure.
Within a few months he possessed just such a home. Within a year he had changed his mental picture to a still larger home in the city of Los Angeles and came into its possession.
Illustrations
We observe in this the growing capacity of those who practice the creative art of visualization. In the author’s opinion one of the most notable illustrations of the scientific use of these principles is found in the experience of Mrs. Genevieve Behrend, the author of “Your Invisible Power,” and the only living personal pupil of Judge Thomas Troward, the famous Mental Science philosopher. Mrs. Behrend tells of her demonstration of the opportunity to study with Troward. She first visualized twenty-thousand dollars with which she contemplated making her trip abroad. Her constant thought was that the “movement of Divine Mind is toward something that is better than that which has gone before.” She herself was in that Mind. She was in line with its forward movement. It was working with her and therefore could be made to work for her. She daily practiced the realization of this co-operation of the Universal with her purpose and mentally pictured herself as in possession of twenty-thousand dollars. As time went on, she had such a development of consciousness that she was able to perceive the possible beginnings of the demonstration, something that led in the direction desired. She firmly put from her mind all anxiety or undue tension knowing the Divine Mind operates without strain of any kind, and, in the language of Judge Troward, “transferred the burden.” But she watched the first indications and sought to place herself in harmony with the requirements. She knew that “the law will not do for you what it can only do through you.” As the impression developed into a definite leadership, she followed by intelligent action and presently found herself in the possession of the twenty-thousand dollars which she had been scientifically visualizing.
To elaborate on this subject would be to repeat the history of financial achievement in thousands of instances in America. Let us quote from Chauncey Depew, formerly president of the New York Central Lines and United States Senator: “In 1887
I had an option on a sixth of the Bell Telephone for some days for $10,000.00. I consulted the most famous telegraph expert in the country and he advised me to drop it. ‘It is a toy and commercially a fake,’ he said. Had I followed my strong faith in the enterprise, I would today be a hundred millionaire. I have always lost money when following the advice of experts. They are governed by their data and lack imagination, and without imagination all things not demonstrated to them are worthless.”*

H.L. Barber in his “Law of Financial Success” who quotes this, also quotes “Uncle Joe Cannon who was offered an interest in the telephone line at the same time and replied that he “preferred to go out and invest in ‘bee lines.’” Which, adds Barber, “substantiates the old saying, ‘the bigger they are, the harder they fall.’”
The Seed Idea and the Universal Plus
Continuing our discussion of the points of visualization, we find in the third place that while we are after something definite, and should therefore be definite, still the exact form which ultimately appears as the answer to the demonstration may not be exactly like the one first visualized. An architect or inventor might make a mental picture which is to embody his idea, but as the clearness of his vision develops, he changes the form to suit the better idea. As the building is being erected the architect may find many points to change. At the same time the building he creates is the answer to his seed thought or vision.
In planting a tree the horticulturist is selecting the idea or variety which he wishes to grow. But if he plants a certain kind of acorn he does not prescribe the exact form the oak will take when fully grown. The idea, germ, life principle in the acorn will grow the oak. “It grows ye know not how,” said Jesus.
At one time a woman came to me asking if I would help her demonstrate the opportunity of becoming a lecturer in metaphysics. “There are two things I must do,” she declared. “What are they?” “I must sell my house and get rid of my husband.”
I explained that it was not our plan to work in that way. If she really wished to become a teacher, that was a matter in itself and I would help her to form her picture and make the demonstration. The result was that she returned to me in a few weeks with tears of gratitude saying she had been reconciled to her husband; the house had not been sold and so furnished an asylum for her daughter who had come home for child birth; and that she was teaching the Truth in her own spacious parlors.
The answer to a demonstration is not always as remote as we think as was once indicated by Gipsy Smith when a woman came to him and said, “I am the mother of twelve children but I have been called of the Lord to preach the Gospel.”
“Praise the Lord,” replied the great evangelist, “he has not only called you to preach the Gospel but he has given you an audience.”
Let us bear in mind then that the idea is the thing. The mental form is merely our way of conceiving an idea. The clearer the idea and the more faith we have in it, the more satisfactory and swift will be the result. But visualization is not creation. It is the choice of and dramatization of an idea. The form which that idea will take may be far more beautiful and serviceable than we can picture. “He giveth exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think,” or as Dr. Julia Seton epitomizes it, “the universal plus is added to it.”

Realization
I believe in the power of Divine Mind to do for me all I ask or think. I believe in myself, in my future, in what I have and what I shall have. I believe in creative ideas. I know that the vision of today is the form of tomorrow and thus it has ever been in the progress of science and civilization. I am not afraid to launch my ideas out in the form of mental pictures, to build a world of dreams which are more than dreams. I believe that great good is coming to me because I am now demanding it and I do demand it. (Then form the mental picture you desire so that you may be ready to utilize it in concentration which will be dealt with in the following chapter.)
Visualization or Dramatization
One may be said to have a concrete idea of a thing if he can make a mental picture of it. A true mental picture has definiteness of detail, outline, and finish. Such a picture cannot be made in ignorance of the subject, and therefore the making of it means study, preparation, fitness. The inventor must understand something of principles in order to create the mechanism. There must be an order and harmony of ideas such as was demonstrated during the war in the creation of the Liberty motor. We have already commended the principle of imagination in the Twenty Secrets of Success.
Imagination is a creative faculty because it enables us to take parts which have hitherto never been arranged in the present order and to assemble them into a form never before assumed. It is thus that angelic forms spring from the broken marble, air-cushioned motors replace the wonderful one-horse shay; and Jules Verne today might ride triumphantly with the United States fleet more than “twenty-thousand leagues under the se” --no doubt as a very welcome guest.
The power of mental dramatization parades mythical figures across the stage, speaking words of romance and despair, of love and death, of comedy and tragedy, and out of it a great play is born. It revels in the splendor of past greatness, clothes its figures in the velvets and laces of royalty, puts ancient kings upon the throne, saves the honor of queens and princesses through the devotion of d’Artagnans, and spreads it all on the silver screen where millions may read the history and romance of antiquity.
One should never be afraid to dramatize his ideals, to make them living things of flesh and blood, of iron and steel, of love and plenty, of honor and attainment.
Rules of Visualization
The rules of visualization are simple. First, decide what you want. You cannot hope to create what is indistinct as a desire. My first question to all who come for help is, “What do you want?” If you do not know, find out. Have a desire, an ambition, a purpose.
Second, see it as clearly with mental vision as you can. The author knew intimately a man who was at one time living in a small beach home in Southern California. He owned only an equity in the property. Having learned the laws of mental creation, he began to visualize himself as owning a very fine residence in another city. He saw himself going up the steps to the porch of the new home, taking the pass key from his pocket, and letting himself in. His mental picture was of a wide and spacious hall with a fireplace in which a blaze sent out its cheerful light and warmth. A stairway led to the upper rooms and he pictured himself as leisurely descending to greet a guest, himself dressed in white, as the symbol of leisure.
Within a few months he possessed just such a home. Within a year he had changed his mental picture to a still larger home in the city of Los Angeles and came into its possession.
Illustrations
We observe in this the growing capacity of those who practice the creative art of visualization. In the author’s opinion one of the most notable illustrations of the scientific use of these principles is found in the experience of Mrs. Genevieve Behrend, the author of “Your Invisible Power,” and the only living personal pupil of Judge Thomas Troward, the famous Mental Science philosopher. Mrs. Behrend tells of her demonstration of the opportunity to study with Troward. She first visualized twenty-thousand dollars with which she contemplated making her trip abroad. Her constant thought was that the “movement of Divine Mind is toward something that is better than that which has gone before.” She herself was in that Mind. She was in line with its forward movement. It was working with her and therefore could be made to work for her. She daily practiced the realization of this co-operation of the Universal with her purpose and mentally pictured herself as in possession of twenty-thousand dollars. As time went on, she had such a development of consciousness that she was able to perceive the possible beginnings of the demonstration, something that led in the direction desired. She firmly put from her mind all anxiety or undue tension knowing the Divine Mind operates without strain of any kind, and, in the language of Judge Troward, “transferred the burden.” But she watched the first indications and sought to place herself in harmony with the requirements. She knew that “the law will not do for you what it can only do through you.” As the impression developed into a definite leadership, she followed by intelligent action and presently found herself in the possession of the twenty-thousand dollars which she had been scientifically visualizing.
To elaborate on this subject would be to repeat the history of financial achievement in thousands of instances in America. Let us quote from Chauncey Depew, formerly president of the New York Central Lines and United States Senator: “In 1887
I had an option on a sixth of the Bell Telephone for some days for $10,000.00. I consulted the most famous telegraph expert in the country and he advised me to drop it. ‘It is a toy and commercially a fake,’ he said. Had I followed my strong faith in the enterprise, I would today be a hundred millionaire. I have always lost money when following the advice of experts. They are governed by their data and lack imagination, and without imagination all things not demonstrated to them are worthless.”*

H.L. Barber in his “Law of Financial Success” who quotes this, also quotes “Uncle Joe Cannon who was offered an interest in the telephone line at the same time and replied that he “preferred to go out and invest in ‘bee lines.’” Which, adds Barber, “substantiates the old saying, ‘the bigger they are, the harder they fall.’”
The Seed Idea and the Universal Plus
Continuing our discussion of the points of visualization, we find in the third place that while we are after something definite, and should therefore be definite, still the exact form which ultimately appears as the answer to the demonstration may not be exactly like the one first visualized. An architect or inventor might make a mental picture which is to embody his idea, but as the clearness of his vision develops, he changes the form to suit the better idea. As the building is being erected the architect may find many points to change. At the same time the building he creates is the answer to his seed thought or vision.
In planting a tree the horticulturist is selecting the idea or variety which he wishes to grow. But if he plants a certain kind of acorn he does not prescribe the exact form the oak will take when fully grown. The idea, germ, life principle in the acorn will grow the oak. “It grows ye know not how,” said Jesus.
At one time a woman came to me asking if I would help her demonstrate the opportunity of becoming a lecturer in metaphysics. “There are two things I must do,” she declared. “What are they?” “I must sell my house and get rid of my husband.”
I explained that it was not our plan to work in that way. If she really wished to become a teacher, that was a matter in itself and I would help her to form her picture and make the demonstration. The result was that she returned to me in a few weeks with tears of gratitude saying she had been reconciled to her husband; the house had not been sold and so furnished an asylum for her daughter who had come home for child birth; and that she was teaching the Truth in her own spacious parlors.
The answer to a demonstration is not always as remote as we think as was once indicated by Gipsy Smith when a woman came to him and said, “I am the mother of twelve children but I have been called of the Lord to preach the Gospel.”
“Praise the Lord,” replied the great evangelist, “he has not only called you to preach the Gospel but he has given you an audience.”
Let us bear in mind then that the idea is the thing. The mental form is merely our way of conceiving an idea. The clearer the idea and the more faith we have in it, the more satisfactory and swift will be the result. But visualization is not creation. It is the choice of and dramatization of an idea. The form which that idea will take may be far more beautiful and serviceable than we can picture. “He giveth exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think,” or as Dr. Julia Seton epitomizes it, “the universal plus is added to it.”

It is a truism of physiology that every cell in the body is in some manner connected with every other cell, and intercourse is established between them. In the same way, each intelligence or ego within the universal intelligence has contact with every other through the medium of mind. It is not my purpose here to dwell upon this at length. It can hardly be denied as an established scientific fact. I refer the reader to “Death and Its Mystery,” Volume I, by Flammarion: in which the author gives examples from many reliable sources including several Americans, among whom the most striking example is Thomas A. Edison. Maeterlinck’s “Unknown Guest” will intrigue the interest. Recently a great deal has appeared in the daily press about the experiments performed by Sir Gilbert Murray, regius professor of Greek, in Oxford University, England, in the presence of Balfour, Lodge, and other notables, in which the learned professor displayed the ability not only the read from the minds of his collaborators directs for finding things, but also was able to give correctly whole lines of plays which they had in mind, but with which he himself was unfamiliar. A Swiss gentleman named Lichtner has of late been touring this country subjecting himself to the examination of scientists in the demonstration of his ability to read the thoughts of others without physical contact of any sort and his literature bears a letter from Professor McDougall of Harvard to the effect that he had succeeded in his experiments. The adepts of India have long possessed the secret of thought-transference as was discovered by the British during the Sepoy rebellion when news of the result of a battle would travel three-hundred miles arriving far in advance of any means of communication of the intelligence department of the English army. It was discovered that the messages were transmitted through the adepts.
One does not need even to allude to the vast store of literature which can be found in the annals of “mental healing at a distance,” or the so-called “absent treatment” in America and England.

I select one out of innumerable illustrations. This is the case of a gentleman who came to Ernest S. Holmes, a noted teacher and healer, complaining of a severe pain in the neck. Treatment was given after the metaphysical method employed by Mr. Holmes in which the healer uses the form of mental argument previously alluded to, followed by a state of mental abstraction in which direct contact is made with the mind of the patient. In this state it is possible to know whether the idea has been registered. In spite of all effort to establish the change of consciousness, Mr. Holmes says that he was unable to do so. Treatments were given several days without results. Then for a short period the man did not come to the office. One night Mr. Holmes woke about twelve o’clock, and as often happens, lay thinking of his work and patients and occasionally giving them a treatment. He thought of the man who was suffering from the pain in his neck and gave him a treatment. Having carried out his mental argument and declared that perfect health was established, he entered into the state of abstraction and was instantly aware that the treatment was registered and the man healed. He fell asleep and it was some days later before he saw the patient. When they did meet the first thing the latter said was, “I had the funniest experience the other night. At midnight on such-and-such a date, (mentioning the night on which he had received the treatment), I was awakened by the most terrific snap in my neck. The pain left me at once and I have been free from it ever since.”
Thousands of authenticated cases are on record, and the time is past when these can be swept aside by the airy wave of a supercilious hand. They are as scientifically established as the facts of wireless. Indeed they have a curious analogy to wireless, and, in general, we may say that as the wireless passes through the continuous medium which we call ether, so thought flies from point to point in the medium of Universal Mind. As the wireless knows no barrier and a six-foot wall has for it no existence, so too are walls unknown to the swift passage of thought. There are laws in the mental world corresponding to those in the material and a study of these analogies will be vastly instructive to the student of mental phenomena.
Our purpose here, however, is to establish the confidence of the student in the principles which he is called upon to employ. But knowledge of the law is not enough. He must use it.

Some years ago the author was devoting much of his time to private practice in Long Beach, California, and a woman came to him stating that she and her son were in the automobile business, but that they were not making money and were behind in their rent. Legal proceedings were inevitable unless the rent was paid. If a sale of what they possessed were forced they would lose practically all, including some cars, a cash register, and other equipment. Their only hope lay in voluntary sale of the business. We began the treatment by entering the subjective state of mind and contacting the Universal Intelligence. We then stated that there were those who would be able to handle the business successfully, that they would come to buy it and that the business was sold. Within twenty-four hours the woman began to receive enquiries and among those who came were two gentlemen from Pasadena. One of the partners was much pleased with the location, the other not. The woman came back to me and said, “Now we have those whom we can get to buy the business, let us concentrate on them.”
I explained that while we might reach the mind of anyone through the universal medium, still it was not morally allowable to attempt to exert any influence of a compulsory character.
Avoidance of Hypnosis
This is a principle which should be carefully borne in mind as it will save from much failure and disappointment. Many become very much enthused with the law of suggestion and metaphysical principles when they learn the wonderful power that can be exerted. They seize upon it as a method of compulsion by which a mind with superior knowledge can dominate a mind unaware of these laws. There was a time when some of the early sales psychologists trained the student in the development of will-power by teaching him to fix his eyes on the face of the prospective buyer and mentally affirm, “You will buy this, you will buy this.” Or to walk down the street and fix the eyes on the back of the neck of a pedestrian and affirm, “You will turn ‘round, you will turn ‘round.” If he bought or if he turned, it was supposed to be a result of the exercise of superior will force.
Christian Science has remarked upon this as malicious animal magnetism, especially when the object is to harm the recipient. There is no doubt that suggestions can be given which, if accepted, can do much harm to those who receive them. But aside from this, there remains the danger, to which everyone is more or less subject, of attempting to influence the decisions and conduct of another without consulting the latter’s will. It is a very subtle temptation for we flatter ourselves that we know better than they do what is good for them --and us. If we cannot enter into their minds by the straight and narrow gate of the conscious, we wish to climb up some other way. But a thief is a thief whether he steals sheep or robs a man of his independence. This is a thing to be remembered even when dealing with others for their supposed good; as when one gives another a mental treatment against his will or without his knowledge.
And failure naturally lies along this line for the simple reason that in attempting to influence another by suggestion whether oral or silent or in absentia you are seeking to impress his subconscious mind with an idea. But at the same time, the man in question may be impressing his own mind with an idea and one which is contrary to yours. As he is rather more “on the inside” than you, his suggestion prevails, yours fails, and disappointment is the result. Many such failures could be reported in cases where the operator has picked out some man whom he has felt necessary to his success, concentrated on him, declared he was necessary, and that he would do as desired.
No one person is necessary or should be thought necessary to success in life. Principle alone is necessary. The necessary is the absolute; all other is relative, and you are dealing with principle.
I explained this to the woman and declared that what we were after was a buyer, not any particular buyer. We continued therefore to maintain that there was a buyer. It shortly developed that the two Pasadena men went to another garage in Long Beach with the intent to buy that establishment. The Long Beach people were willing to sell if they could move into a down-town garage. The Pasadena men referred them to the woman I was assisting, and they bought her place and saved her from loss and bankruptcy. In this case three distinct parties were served without coercion or sacrifice.

I am in the midst of the one and only mind whose presence is everywhere as the order and harmony of the universe. In this mind everything takes place in perfect harmony. There is no friction of any kind. There is enough for all without robbery of any. Whatever I desire may be achieved in full accord with the desires of others. Space is unknown, distance is only relative, mind is continuous, and my thought can go wherever I send it. I am now about to set my thought into activity to the solution of my problem; and all things, people, and events, necessary to its accomplishment will fall into harmonious order and activity without compulsion of any kind. I realize that my problem is being worked upon by a greater intelligence, a more thorough-going wisdom, a stronger power, and that “no good thing will He without from them that walk uprightly.”

II, Metaphyshics and Psychology
Chapter II
Metaphysics and Psychology
The metaphysical movements which practice healing by mental and spiritual means are based on the principles of monistic idealistic philosophy, --the almost universally accepted philosophy of modern thinkers. It is monistic because it claims there is but one natural order and principle, one system and One God. It is idealistic because it explains the ultimate reality as spirit, and the world of things to be really a world of ideas. Every phenomenon has its noumenon, every form has its soul.*
*The reader may have noted frequent articles in recent news telling of the discoveries of Sir Jargadis Chandra Bose, corroborating this philosophy scientifically.
During the middle of the past century, at the time of the rise of modern metaphysical movements and applied psychology, the position of the religious leaders was that of dualism rather than monism. They taught, as many still do that there is both spirit and matter, but that the spirit incarnates in matter, uses and controls it for physical purposes, and discards it at death. The position of science was opposite to this. It taught that the origin of life is in matter and that there is no intelligence apart from matter. When the body dissolves, the spirit dies. This is materialistic monism because it believes both life and matter to be one, but life to be only a passing phase of the movement of matter.
An inevitable conflict arose between these two concepts and the battle between religion and science has been waged hotly from that day to this.* But the originators of the new movement which we call mental or spiritual science, came in with a new answer. They declared that the materialists were right in the statement that there is only one substance: but they affirmed the primacy of spirit as this one and only substance. They brought about an adjustment between science and religion by accepting the principle of unity advanced by science; and spiritual causation advanced by religion. This position is held today not only by the met physicists but by a large part of the liberal religious leaders of all denominations.
*The Scopes trial in 1925 over the teachings of evolution in the schools, which brought in William Jennings Bryan and other notables, is illustrative of this.
Briefly summarizing the principles of practical metaphysics we find
1. The primary nature of the universe is spirit. Jesus said, “God is spirit.” Moses said, “Beside Him there is none other.” St. John said, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God. All things were made by him.”
2. There is only one way spirit can work and that is by thought. Spirit is creative and creates by thought. “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made.”
3. Man is the child of God, sharing his nature and being, at one with him; and therefore he creates as God creates, by the word. The actual creation is the movement of mind upon the thought or word spoken by God’s child. It is the demand of the ego upon Principle, which creates accordingly. To speak the word is enough. Nothing else is needed.*
*This refers to the casual treatment. Much else is needed in the training of the mind and consciousness, as this book has sought to show.
Metaphysical Treatment
A metaphysical treatment, therefore, consists of several parts: (1) Statement of Being --the All-ness of God, Mind, or Principle. (2) Recognition of the divine unity by which man is realized as one with God or Principle, His child, sharing His resources, endowed with His power. Creations are taking place, these creations have a beginning. The nature of the creation must depend upon the nature of the “word” that brings it into being. If this word is “destructive” is will get a result in kind: if it is constructive, it will get a similar answer.
Accordingly, a metaphysical treatment means the planting of a thought in the One and Only Mind and realizing that it is planted there. But if we turn back to Volume One,* we shall find that our definition of suggestion is the fixation of ideas in the subconscious mind until they are realized; or, in the language of Baudoin, the interpreter of Coue, “suggestion is the subconscious realization of an idea.”

But the surrounding soil, the moisture and sun, the air and the conditions of growth are shared by all plots, that is, they are at-one with his.
Metaphysical treatment however engenders a stronger faith because results one seeks are in no way measured by his own “frail” ability, but rather a universal power is working on his suggestion or affirmation, with infinite wisdom backed by infinite strength. The power he uses is not that of an electrical battery but rather it is drawn direct from the universal dynamo.
The following statement embodies the principles we have just considered and is the form used by the author in his weekly lecture-sermon at the services of the Divine Science Church in the Waldorf-Astoria, New York. It is followed by a healing treatment which will be found in the last paragraph of Chapter V.
Our Principles
My faith is based on the Science of the Soul; there is One Cause, Spirit or Universal Intelligence; one method, Mind or Universal Law; one manifestation, body or matter, with an infinite variety of forms. I deal, therefore only with Primary Causation and seek conscious union with Spirit that I may become identified with and directed by Divine Wisdom alone. Metaphysics and Psychology
The metaphysical movements which practice healing by mental and spiritual means are based on the principles of monistic idealistic philosophy, --the almost universally accepted philosophy of modern thinkers. It is monistic because it claims there is but one natural order and principle, one system and One God. It is idealistic because it explains the ultimate reality as spirit, and the world of things to be really a world of ideas. Every phenomenon has its noumenon, every form has its soul.*
*The reader may have noted frequent articles in recent news telling of the discoveries of Sir Jargadis Chandra Bose, corroborating this philosophy scientifically.
During the middle of the past century, at the time of the rise of modern metaphysical movements and applied psychology, the position of the religious leaders was that of dualism rather than monism. They taught, as many still do that there is both spirit and matter, but that the spirit incarnates in matter, uses and controls it for physical purposes, and discards it at death. The position of science was opposite to this. It taught that the origin of life is in matter and that there is no intelligence apart from matter. When the body dissolves, the spirit dies. This is materialistic monism because it believes both life and matter to be one, but life to be only a passing phase of the movement of matter.
An inevitable conflict arose between these two concepts and the battle between religion and science has been waged hotly from that day to this.* But the originators of the new movement which we call mental or spiritual science, came in with a new answer. They declared that the materialists were right in the statement that there is only one substance: but they affirmed the primacy of spirit as this one and only substance. They brought about an adjustment between science and religion by accepting the principle of unity advanced by science; and spiritual causation advanced by religion. This position is held today not only by the met physicists but by a large part of the liberal religious leaders of all denominations.
*The Scopes trial in 1925 over the teachings of evolution in the schools, which brought in William Jennings Bryan and other notables, is illustrative of this.
Briefly summarizing the principles of practical metaphysics we find
1. The primary nature of the universe is spirit. Jesus said, “God is spirit.” Moses said, “Beside Him there is none other.” St. John said, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God. All things were made by him.”
2. There is only one way spirit can work and that is by thought. Spirit is creative and creates by thought. “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made.”
3. Man is the child of God, sharing his nature and being, at one with him; and therefore he creates as God creates, by the word. The actual creation is the movement of mind upon the thought or word spoken by God’s child. It is the demand of the ego upon Principle, which creates accordingly. To speak the word is enough. Nothing else is needed.*
*This refers to the casual treatment. Much else is needed in the training of the mind and consciousness, as this book has sought to show.
Metaphysical Treatment
A metaphysical treatment, therefore, consists of several parts: (1) Statement of Being --the All-ness of God, Mind, or Principle. Power of Mind
The Unity of Nature
While we live in a world of infinite variety of forms, still there is a fundamental unity which the more careful observer can find. In fact, the whole movement of modern science is in the direction of simplification and unification. In the world of so-called matter we find that in place of eighty-eight or more indissoluble and primary substances there is only energy and that each of these “primaries” is composed of a varying number of corpuscles of negative electricity held together by an equal positive charge. The difference between the primaries is merely the difference in the number and placement of these corpuscles or electrons. It is possible to change one primary into another as was recently done by subjecting tungsten to terrific heat, thereby freeing some of the electrons and producing helium. On the plane of matter, therefore, we find that the substance of which the universe is composed is one stuff --energy.
Turning to the question of simplification of “life” we find that the science of biology has demonstrated that all forms, however complex, are built up of myriad smaller forms each of which may be called a cell and has an intelligence of its own. As we study cell-life we are led back into ever-simpler forms until we come to what may be considered the “primary cell.” The evolution of life, therefore, no matter how far it has proceeded, has been development from primitive similar or identical cells. A cell is a combination of life and energy, or, putting it in a different form, a cell is a group of primary energies held in place by primary intelligence which we call life.
The thing to note about the foregoing facts is the principle of unity. Identity of nature indicates identity of origin. It is to be supposed that the origin of the primitive intelligence of the cell is identical for all cells, no matter how far they may have evolved. This is a very important principle as it denotes a widely diffused and presumably Universal Intelligence from which the primitive intelligence of the cell is derived.
The massive problem of modern science is the question as to whether the intelligence of the cell is the product of the energy, or the energy is the product of the intelligence. Here is the breeding-ground of all the disputes between science and religion, science usually giving the first for an answer, and religion giving the second. John Burroughs says that “life is a mode of motion in matter”* but he could not explain what that “mode of motion” is. He says that it is something that lifts up otherwise inert matter into organized form; but the very fact that it does it in one place and not another demonstrates that the original impulse is not to be found in matter itself, or else it would do it in all places, since the nature of matter supposedly is the opposite of intelligence which has the power of choice as to where it will “lift up” matter into form. The conclusion that life rather than matter is the originating impulse is rationally scientific because life is intelligence and intelligence may mean selection. In other words we cannot suppose that matter, from its very nature, has the power of selection as to where it will manifest a varied form; but on the other hand, we can imagine that intelligence can and does possess that power. Therefore the variety of form is the product of an ever acting and infinitely varied intelligence.

It is necessary to take only one further step and that is to investigate the probable ultimate nature and origin of matter itself. We have found that the basis of matter is energy, but the source of this energy is to be sought. Analyzing the electron we find that it is itself not a “thing,” not a “particle of matter,” but merely a vortex created by the crossing of lines of force. There is “nothing to it,” in other words. It is not primary but a product, a state, resulting from the action of “higher forces.” What these higher forces may be has no answer from the standpoint of material science. It is and must ever remain a mystery to the materialist, and therefore the “science” of the materialist is based on a mysticism or an abysmal ignorance to which the science of the mystic is as a bright and shining light.
The Universal Subconscious
We are not taking up the defense of mysticism but we wish scientifically to establish that more of “the facts” are with the idealist than are to be found with the materialist, because the former is consistent throughout and his system is complete. For he declares that “lines of force” are the result of the play of intelligence; in other words, there is a universal intelligence in which all life and movement take place; this intelligence “thinks”; thinking produces a state from which the lines of force are derived; the crossing of the lines of force produce the electron, and so forth. The electron is the effect of consciousness rather than the cause. The effect cannot produce the cause, therefore the “material energies” of the cell cannot produce the intelligence that governs it. They can only obey it.
In the foregoing, lies the rationale of healing by metaphysical means whether it be by the method of Christian or Divine Science, Unity or any other movement. It also explains the method of the control of one’s destiny through the use of mental law in business and profession. There is a universal medium of mind. This mind is the source of all, the support of all. It is homogeneous, non-dissociable; everywhere present, as the life and energy of the universe. In it “we live, and move, and have our being.” As it is one it necessarily follows that all within it is of a similar nature. The intelligence of the individual mind must therefore be of the same kind. Or reversing the statement we may say that the intelligence of the Universal must, in its impersonal aspect, be of a kind with the individual.
We have already found what the impersonal aspect of the individual intelligence is like and we have called it “subconscious.” Without further discussion, therefore, we shall speak of the Universal Intelligence, from the standpoint of its impersonal activity, as the Universal Subconscious. We are not here concerned with its personal nature. I have discussed that at length in “The Law of Mind in Action,” and the larger part of my volume “Being and Becoming” is devoted to the subject. Our immediate concern is to note that there is a Universal Subconscious in which all mental action takes place even though that action has its inception in the individual. The word “individual” is itself only the designation of a center of consciousness within the Universal. When you or I think therefore, we are thinking within the circle of the Universal. “The center is everywhere, the circumference nowhere.” Whatever we think must spread like a ripple contacting other centers, other points in mind.
We have in the radio a picture of this. To the radio the ether is impersonal. Any message may be set afloat in it. You choose what you wish to broadcast, and the message spreads everywhere. In effect, the receiving apparatus may be anywhere. But messages of danger or of uplift, of warning or encouragement may be all around us, and unless we tune in on them we are as though they did not exist.
The Impersonal Nature of Universal Mind
Let us bear in mind the impersonal nature of the Universal Intelligence or Subconscious. To do so is to save ourselves from splitting on the rocks of religious controversy, and creating the false assumption that only those who have a peculiar religious bias can avail themselves of these principles in the cure of disease and the demonstration of plenty. In fact, we may think, if we wish, of the Universal Subconscious as intelligent force, able to accept, understand, and operate upon any idea given it; working it out to a definite and complete conclusion, but with no choices of its own as opposed to ours. So far as the individual is concerned the ancient adage holds good, “The Whole does not will, it is only the part that wills.” Or, as we find it elsewhere represented by the sages, “Law is no respecter of persons,” and “whatsoever a man soweth that (and no other) shall he also reap.” The just and the unjust alike receive sunshine, and the rain wets them both.
We thus see the Universal Subconscious or as the Middle Age writers termed it, “Anima Mundi,” may be looked upon as the refinement of force. Thus its employment is not different from the employment of other forces, such as attraction of gravity in running a water wheel, steam, electricity. It is merely the super force from which these are derived. Electricity is impersonal for it presents no objections to those who would use its power. It will light your house if you screw in a bulb, or it will knock you over if you stick in a finger.
The universal force will give its answer in the terms of the request. It is neither good nor bad; it is neutral and impersonal. IT IS. To attribute personality to it would be as false as to attribute personality to the individual subconscious. The individual subconscious is neither good nor bad and accepts without protest whatever impression is made upon it.
Is it true then that there is no Universal Goodness, no Universal Love betraying its presence throughout the universe and answering the cry of the hungry heart? To ask such a question is to show a misunderstanding of the principles here elucidated. Does the neutral and non-moral aspect of electricity prove or disprove the love or presence of God? It has nothing directly to do with it.
The forces of the individual subconscious are played upon by thoughts, ideals, and suggestions, and the responsiveness of these forces neither proves nor disproves the goodness or badness of the incarnating ego. The self is personal. The subconscious is impersonal. Conceiving of the ego as being able to be “good” or “bad,” we may say that a “good” ego will impress only “good” ideas upon its impersonal and creative mind; and because the ego is “good,” his choices will be always those that will produce a state of goodness in the subconscious. Therefore, the reactions or results will be “good” but the subconscious is only good by courtesy. Water is said to be “good” when flavored with fruit juices, and “bad” when flavored with bitters. But water is neither good nor bad.
In the same way we may be sure that the Universal Subconscious is good or bad only by courtesy. When moved upon by “good” ideas it is flavored with “goodness” and when moved upon by “badness,” it contains bitter waters. We may feel sure that all the ideas of the Dominating Intelligence to which the lower intelligence is “sub” --are good. In the larger aspects, the Universal Self is working out His great purposes and these are kindly and well-meant for the race as a whole. He is therefore the All-Good, the All-Loving, the All-Wise, and our hearts may and should be turned to him in adoration and delight. “Thou hast made us for Thyself and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.” *

But no amount of adoration and delight can cause the turning of a hair in the balance of the scales of justice which mete out to each the fruit of his own sowing. At the same time, to “practice the Presence of God is the best rule for a holy life,” just as the practice of love in the family circle is the best rule for domestic felicity. The atmosphere of a home is “good” when the thoughts, ideals, and acts of its members are good. So we, if we would express or demonstrate the best that life can give, must place our minds on the highest ideals which can inspire to thoughts and suggestions whose harvest is kindness, goodwill, peace among men, health, happiness, and success. And there is nothing which can so inspire those ideals as faith in and love for God.
This faith in and love for God, however, can be absolutely divorced from the idea of creeds and established religions. It is not Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Buddhist, nor Mohammedan faith. It may be any one of these or entirely apart from fixed dogma. It belongs to all. You do not need to change the “faith of your fathers” to get results. It is possible to get them without having faith in a personal God. “Whatsoever things ye have need of, when ye pray, believe ye have received them, and ye shall receive them.” To pray, then, in regard to things is not to wheedle them out of a reluctant God, please a sentimental God, arouse a slothful God, nor placate an angry God. It is to sow the seeds of faith or expectancy of the thing which you desire to demonstrate or bring forth into expression.

To ask such a question is to show a misunderstanding of the principles here elucidated. Does the neutral and non-moral aspect of electricity prove or disprove the love or presence of God? It has nothing directly to do with it.
The forces of the individual subconscious are played upon by thoughts, ideals, and suggestions, and the responsiveness of these forces neither proves nor disproves the goodness or badness of the incarnating ego. The self is personal. The subconscious is impersonal. Conceiving of the ego as being able to be “good” or “bad,” we may say that a “good” ego will impress only “good” ideas upon its impersonal and creative mind; and because the ego is “good,” his choices will be always those that will produce a state of goodness in the subconscious. Therefore, the reactions or results will be “good” but the subconscious is only good by courtesy. Water is said to be “good” when flavored with fruit juices, and “bad” when flavored with bitters. But water is neither good nor bad.
In the same way we may be sure that the Universal Subconscious is good or bad only by courtesy. When moved upon by “good” ideas it is flavored with “goodness” and when moved upon by “badness,” it contains bitter waters. We may feel sure that all the ideas of the Dominating Intelligence to which the lower intelligence is “sub” --are good. In the larger aspects, the Universal Self is working out His great purposes and these are kindly and well-meant for the race as a whole. He is therefore the All-Good, the All-Loving, the All-Wise, and our hearts may and should be turned to him in adoration and delight. “Thou hast made us for Thyself and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.” *

But no amount of adoration and delight can cause the turning of a hair in the balance of the scales of justice which mete out to each the fruit of his own sowing. At the same time, to “practice the Presence of God is the best rule for a holy life,” just as the practice of love in the family circle is the best rule for domestic felicity. The atmosphere of a home is “good” when the thoughts, ideals, and acts of its members are good. So we, if we would express or demonstrate the best that life can give, must place our minds on the highest ideals which can inspire to thoughts and suggestions whose harvest is kindness, goodwill, peace among men, health, happiness, and success. And there is nothing which can so inspire those ideals as faith in and love for God.
This faith in and love for God, however, can be absolutely divorced from the idea of creeds and established religions. It is not Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Buddhist, nor Mohammedan faith. It may be any one of these or entirely apart from fixed dogma. It belongs to all. You do not need to change the “faith of your fathers” to get results. It is possible to get them without having faith in a personal God. “Whatsoever things ye have need of, when ye pray, believe ye have received them, and ye shall receive them.” To pray, then, in regard to things is not to wheedle them out of a reluctant God, please a sentimental God, arouse a slothful God, nor placate an angry God. It is to sow the seeds of faith or expectancy of the thing which you desire to demonstrate or bring forth into expression.
The New Thought movement is helping people.

The first volume of this series showed the nature and laws of the subconscious mind and how they may be used to bring success and financial freedom. The object of this volume is to show how the individual subconscious mind is related to the universal and how we may get Universal Force to work for us. We can never reach a goal unless we have a goal to reach. This book shows that the ego or self always has a goal, that it has come into this world for a purpose and how we may find out what that purpose is. Then if we go to work scientifically we can carry out that purpose; for all the forces of law, and our own nature will be with us instead of against us. Many of us are working against our own nature, and the biggest enemy we have is ourselves for we are standing in our own way. We are here for self-expression, and if that self-expression is denied, we are likely to be the victims of neuroses, complexes, mental wretchedness and consequent failure. The answer is therefore found in discovering our own particular genius and making the choice of a profession along that line. There is a way in which this can be done. Introduction to Volume Two of the Financial Freedom Series
Just as every cell in the body is related to every other cell, so every truth is in harmony with every other truth, every fact with every other fact in the universe. At the same time the world is in constant quarrel over what is fact and what is not fact, and especially at variance over the interpretation of facts. The advancement of science and the progress of civilization largely depend upon the simplification and unification of ideas and conduct, and the consequent removal of friction in the intercourse of man with man. The kingdom of heaven on earth may be conceived as the ideal state to which mankind may aspire in the words of Jesus when “they may all be one even as Thou Father art in me and I in Thee.” Science, philosophy, and liberal theology are definitely lined up to the advancement of this ideal, and their interrelationship is undeniable. In fact, we are coming to perceive that all phases of human activity must be of one fabric -business and religion, science and society, health and happiness: a man is one self engaged in manifold forms of self-expression.
Bearing this in mind I have for some years desired to write a new volume embodying some of the oral teaching I have been giving throughout America along the line of harmonizing some principles hitherto supposed to be at variance, having been encouraged to do it by unnumbered requests. Believing with Jesus that “where a man’s treasure is, there will his heart be also,” I have selected the field of Financial Freedom and shown how it may be secured through the employment of a law which obtains not merely in business but in religion, ethics, sociology, psychology, and in fact every form of human knowledge and action. It is a law which the devotee of any religion and the student of any business alike may use; indeed must use, and is using whether aware of it or not.
In this matter I have particularly sought to show the meeting point between two systems of thought which have considered themselves at variance with each other. I refer to the schools of applied psychology and practical metaphysics. The former has felt that the latter was too vague and mystical; the latter has held that the former is too materialistic, and hypnotic in method. But disaster has frequently befallen each through disregard of the other. Vast numbers of sincere men and women have lost faith and courage through attempts to win financial freedom or health by the employment of pure thought without the acquisition of technical and psychological knowledge. They have sought to win it by spiritual principle without mental practice or development. The promises made to them have often been too glowing; speeches have inspired them “with zeal but not according to knowledge.” They have been urged beyond the field of the present development of consciousness or understanding and, blinded by the sun, have fallen into a pit. The consequent despair of metaphysical principles and the abandonment of them altogether is one of the saddest chapters of the great new movement which should mean so much to the mind and heart of humanity.
On the other hand, there have been unnumbered others who have been “psychologies” with high expectancy and lofty promises whose fulfillment has been equally disappointing. Some, because the promised method was never adequately taught; others, because their first zeal was not backed with the faith inspired by the realization that no man ever works alone, but that back of him is the unlimited resource of a universal mind which understands his problem and bears within itself the solution of all problems, and to which he may transfer his burden. He has started out faithfully to daily affirm that he is “getting better and better,” richer and richer, happier and happier, but the “spell” did not last because he knew naught of the law by which he was to get better and better and he was uninspired by the joyous contact which with fuller knowledge might be made with the Heart and Mind of the Universe.
There is an essential harmony between these two great bodies of mental workers, and their cooperation and coordination will mean much to advancement of the truth they seek to utter. It is only through this unification that scientific fact can be allied with scientific faith, and the world, as a body, brought safely along the pathway which leads to spiritual vision and wisdom. And it is to this spiritual vision and wisdom that we must look for the emancipation of the race from sin, sickness, and poverty.
Fanaticism is unnecessary to the attainment of results. Zeal may be rational while fanaticism is irrational. Whole-hearted commitment to a principle is the very essence of success, but we may have whole-heartedness without intellectual stultification or the abandonment of sense.
Let those who have failed, therefore, to attain all that they had hoped for not lose courage or faith in the law but rather let them go back a bit, tracing again the path they have traveled to see whether or not they have followed the rules; whether their zeal has been according to knowledge. And when they find that the law is true but their use of it was wrong, again let them not despair. For it is possible to train the consciousness until we can rationally use the law; to train the mind to make better choices and to act more intelligently because we are better equipped with mental and technical skill. It is better to move slowly than not at all, and the acquirement of technical and mental skill is in itself a demonstration of the power of mind to open up the way to success.

PLEIADIAN TEACHINGS

The Tribulation:
"Time is beginning to squeeze itself up upon you, and if you do not act things can become moving into discomfort. You have a few more years before things are going to be so topsy-turvy and so hectic that at that point, if you do not live your life in the true eminence of light as you have volunteered to be, it could be too late. In other words, if you are going to procrastinate, then you will be washed into the undertow of the tidal wave as it comes, perhaps literally."
"All the stability and all the security that you have been trained to hope for in your life is going to be completely and totally unavailable. The whole pie-in-the-sky American dream is going to go down the drain, and it's a darn good thing because the whole pie-in-the-sky American dream is based on the solid 3-D material world."

The Moon:

And when The Moon is in darkness, The New Moon, it is a time of incredible broadcasts, the same as when it is in the fullness. The Moon is capable of sending holographic broadcasts."
"Your Moon is not what would be called a natural heavenly body. It is put there and anchored there, and it is a relay station. It is like a gigantic satellite. It is a base that intelligence can operate from. Moons can be thought of just like the forts were on the edge of the frontier in the days when The West was being developed. Human DNA:

The Pyramids:

The Endocrine System:
"The endocrine system is vastly misunderstood and underestimated inside your human body. If you follow some of the more hair-raising stories of ET participation upon your planet, you will understand that they insert themselves to raid or to borrow portions of endocrine functions. They understand the importance of it."
"Within these endocrine locales (near The Chakras) in the body, there are bundles of energy. When these energies begin to move around systematically, smoothly, at different rates, they begin to create harmonics within each other, just like the harmonics each person creates with sound."
"When you begin to spin these different systems inside of the body, the body creates its own inner harmonics, and it accesses different frequency modulations that vary the degree of the carrier wave which transmits intelligence. So, what you are doing in all of these things (like spinning, deepbreathing, toning) is that you are stepping up your intelligence. You will perform to a much greater degree in the world of intuition, in the world that is based on knowing, not in the world that is based on outside validation. Animals:
"You do not understand that animals were designed and they operate in a capacity that humans have no idea of. The animals are utilized by other forms of consciousness to monitor you, to check you out, to read your energy. They are outreaches of consciousness that function on a frequency that you do not even recognize exists."

Some evolved to become what you believed you needed for nourishment. Mars, The Guardian:

That is why many of you are going to move back to your land and at least be growing what you need to grow in conjunction with your Earth. You will move away from fungicides and pesticides and fertilizer and all of these things because you will realize that these events have been simply a scam."
"You were told that this was the best way to farm. You don't need these things. You speak to The Earth, and you tell The Earth what you want. You speak to the bugs and the creatures, and you plant a little bit for the animals so that they have their own garden and let The Earth provide for you. Animals:

The animals are utilized by other forms of consciousness to monitor you, to check you out, to read your energy. Mars, The Guardian:
